Last year Sid Martin, Director of Technology at Northeast Maritime Institute was faced with a dilemma. He had been hired to spearhead a project bringing the latest technology to the field of Maritime Security and test it in the field. Martin was the perfect candidate for this job. Prior to working at NMI he was a member of the project team responsible for the wheel bearings on the Mars Lander and in doing so became familiar with the obstacles faced in developing products for use in harsh environments. But the project was nearing completion and he needed to find new ways to use his experience at the institute.
Before developing Aerospace technology Martin worked for years in the manufacturing of semiconductors and during this time he gained both knowledge and experience coating objects at a molecular scale. With the sole directive of realizing the Institute’s mission to “honor the mariner” Sid diverted his focus from maritime security to a long stirring idea; Waterproofing Electronics.

OZONE TECHNOLOGY : OZFIL™
In order to treat drinking water efficiently certain process criteria have to be met: A given amount of ozone must be introduced to the process water and, after introduction, there must be sufficient residence time in order to give the ozone time to work.
The OZFIL™ product incorporates all of the components required to produce and dose ozone to the process water: air dryer for the feed gas preparation; OZAT® ozone generator; motive water pump and injector system; stainless steel contact chamber for a residence time of at least four minutes; automatic degassing valve with vent ozone destruct unit; residual ozone analyser; flow meter; circulation bypass; control system and all skid interconnections.
HOW IT WORKS
Ozonation ensures a very high product quality resulting in a long shelf life. A dose of ozone in the range of 0.3 mg/l to 0.5 mg/l, is sufficient to sanitise the product and the product packaging.
After this, the ozone will have oxidised the organic substances and the microbial activity will have been reduced to a minimum.

This is the SunRed solar-powered motorcycle that won the Best Innovative Technology award at the Barcelona Int’l Auto Show, this does look pretty cool and anything that is good to the environment and can be classed as gadget or latest technology is good in my books.
motorcycle, the prototype will be able to store electrical power from captured sunlight and power the motorcycle in the most environmentally-friendly way.The clamshell looking motorcycle is built that way to optimize the panel’s surface and to make the vehicle not too bulky. The SunRed solar-powered motorcycle is not moving it can store energy for up to 20km (13 miles) and travel at around 50km/h (30 mph).
Most modern electric bikes are designed in the same way as the motor on this solar-powered motorcycle; it is placed right in the axle of the wheel and brushless.
Now we got to remember this vehicle designed by SunRed is just a concept, but the company hopes that this will become a benchmark for future developments of solar applications in different vehicles.

Firstly I tested the Jawbone Bluetooth headset without the 'Noise Shield technology' function, which ensures sounds in the background are minimized. The sound quality is of a very high level, but the thing that came to my mind straight away, was the need for a function to lessen the background sounds. The volume can be adjusted in six steps through the 'Talk button', and offers sufficient volume which makes it easy to adjust it according to the surroundings. The fact that headsets are often used in a noisy environment, made me try out the Jawbone headset in the car on the motorway. Apart from the background noise the conversations went fine and effortlessly. It became more difficult to hear my partner on the other end of the phone when music was turned on in the car and of course also for my partner it got more difficult to hear me. A perfect moment to start using the 'Noise Shield technology' function.
The Jawbone headset has been equipped with Aliph's latest technology for minimizing background sounds in order to enable having normal conversations in every situation, also in noisy circumstances. This technology goes by the ever so fitting name of 'Noise Shield technology'. You can activate this function by pressing the 'Noise Shield technology' button for 3 seconds. Turning this function on during the conversation with my partner, his first reaction was: "Are you still there?" Things had gotten so quiet; he thought I had ended the call. The sound of the wind on the motorway and the music of the car had disappeared immediately after activating 'Noise Shield technology'. During the rest of the call I made sure not to raise my voice to test if the 'Noise Shield technology' really works the way Aliph claims. Not only in the car on a motorway with music turned on, but also in a pub with loud background music I can only come to one conclusion: the 'Noise Shield technology' works perfectly!

(Peter Howe, NECN) - Jim Ricotta and Cheng Wu aren’t household names, but among New England technology entrepreneurs, they are rock stars. Between them, they helped found five telecom and networking startups that later got acquired for more than $7 billion dollars by giants like Cisco, IBM and Lucent. Their new big idea involves the cellphone.
After months in secret startup in Acton, Massachusetts, their new company, Azuki Systems, gets formally launched next week. Its big innovation: a software platform called Media Mashup. It turns web content into phone-sized pieces and formats.
Then, catching the social networking craze, Azuki lets you share web-phone content with your Facebook or MySpace friends like you'd share something by computer.
Azuki also enables advertisers to put in ads relevant to stuff you've shown you like to buy.
Three billion people own cellphones, and 75 percent, it's estimated, can download web content. Cellphone companies' expensive new TV-on-phone services haven't been a raging success yet. But mobile entertainment is still a healthy $20 billion dollar market now, potentially tripling to $64 billion by 2012.
One reason Azuki's sure to create some buzz: the track record of Chairman Wu and CEO Ricotta. To quote the mutual fund warning, past results are no guarantees of future success.

Assets 2002 is delighted to have as its Keynote speaker Professor Alan Newell of the University of Dundee.
Professor Newell's interest in research into computer systems to assist people with disabilities began in 1968 at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories. Since that time his work has attracted numerous awards, including the highly prestigious Lloyd of Kilgerran Prize from The Foundation for Science and Technology. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to IT and communication for people with disabilities in the 2000 Queen's Birthday Honours list.
As head of the Department of Applied Computing at the University of Dundee, Professor Newell directs one of the largest and most influential groups in the world researching into communication systems for disabled people. His other major research interests are in computer systems in areas of high social impact, and Human Computer Interaction, with a particular focus on the parallels between "ordinary" people operating in "extra-ordinary" environments, (e.g. high work and stress) and "Extra-ordinary" people (e.g. those with disabilities) operating in "ordinary" environments.
He has published over 200 papers, including 80 journal papers, and 16 book chapters, and holds 12 patents.
Professor Newell is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the British Computer Society, Institution of Electrical Engineers, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Dubbed the OT-C825 Vintage Slider, it's anything but old fashioned: the handset has dedicated music playback keys; a 176 x200, 262,144-colour display; Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP wireless stereo technology; and a six-hour talk time.
The camera's resolution is a little behind the times - it's just 1.3 megapixels - but it'll work as a webcam if the phone's connected to a PC's USB port.
Perhaps it's the phone's "smokey brown" colour scheme that gives it that "vintage" feel? It's certainly got a dour, retro quality to it reminscent of bakelite radios and their ilk.
The OT-C825 comes with a 128MB MicroSD card for song storage. It's a tri-band GSM device.
Alcatel said the phone will go on sale in the June/July timeframe, but it didn't say how much the Vintage Slider will cost.

Tech heads and early adopters must have had a field day at CeBIT, Australia's largest technology trade show. It wrapped up this week, clearing the way for the latest hardware and software to be embraced by consumers and businesses. Some of the gear is already available, other devices will arrive later this year. Much of it capitalises on the trend toward mobile work.
Among the stars of the show was the ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC) - between a tablet PC and a personal digital assistant (PDA) - with full PC capabilities at half of the price of a tablet. The new $1650 EO from TabletKiosk is 50 per cent bigger than the average PDA, runs Windows XP and ditches Pocket PC applications in favour of full Windows software versions.
It's handier and lighter than a tablet or laptop and more useful than a PDA, primarily because of its 17cm touch screen. The UMPC will come with hard drives from 30GB to 160GB, and with memory up to 1GB. It is Wi-Fi and internet enabled, but does not have a mobile phone, although we are told one can be connected via Bluetooth.
